Do you work with men, women, families, or couples?
I work with the young, but I also work with all who are young at heart!
I see men, women, and children in individual and family sessions.
I don’t see couples unless the partner is a support system for the individual.
Do you give homework assignments between sessions?
Yes, I sometimes give homework assignments, especially during the action phase of therapy.
They’ll be based on your level of comfort and readiness, and they’re never mandatory.
What modalities do you use in your work with clients?
I use a range of modalities with my clients, depending on their developmental stage and issues.
For example, I would probably use play therapy or expressive therapy techniques with children.
Motivational interviewing and strength-based approaches usually work well with teens.
Dialectical-behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, or solution-focused approaches may be used with adults, depending on their needs.
What is your professional training and experience?
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and my master’s and specialization in education in mental health counseling from the University of Florida.
I completed my practica and internships in and around Gainesville, Florida. I’ve since had 20+ years of experience in in-home therapy; inpatient and partial hospitalization programs; schools; and individual, group, and family therapy through telehealth.
My areas of expertise include post-traumatic stress disorder, depressive and anxiety disorders, attention-deficit disorders, career counseling, school issues, and behavioral/anger management issues.
What do you do in sessions with clients?
It changes with each client!
It could be playing with a dollhouse or sandbox with children.
It might be talking about a teenager’s problems with peers at school while putting together beads… or playing video games while talking about a traumatic event.
It could be meeting with a client virtually while they fold up clothes because they haven’t had the energy to clean up for a while, allowing them to do something while talking instead of looking me in the eyes for an hour.
Or it might be interpreting an assessment or reviewing strategies.
Most importantly, though… it’s listening.
What’s the story behind your name?
It’s an interesting name, so I get this question a lot!
My mother named me after Genobia Christmas, a friend she made in summer camp when she was 15. It’s an old name with many variations (Zenobia is the most common).
My middle name (Wedemier) is my maiden name… after my Jamaican father’s surname. I traced the name back to the Germans who immigrated to Jamaica in the 1830s.
My last name is Babalola, a Yoruba name from Nigeria that I inherited through marriage.
Genobia Wedemier Babalola is truly a multicultural name, and I love to learn from all cultures!
Do you speak any languages other than English?
I love languages! If I could have any superpower, it would be to speak every language in the world.
I have been studying Spanish for the past ten years and have come pretty close to fluency several times. But at this point, I understand more than I speak.
I have also studied Yoruba, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, German, Italian, and French.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
I adore the Caribbean. My perfect spot would be on a beach in Jamaica under a mango tree with some seafood!
What are your go-tos for self-care?
Do you like wearing shoes?
Why did you name your dog October?
Fancy establishment or hole-in-the-wall restaurant?
I really like the fancy fusion restaurants. I’ve had many memorable dishes there.
But nothing gets me more excited than finding a local dive that serves amazing home cooking!
